

History
The College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka (CGPSL) is the apex, professional, academic body of Family physicians and had its beginnings in 1969. The College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka was incorporated in 1974 with the incorporation law No. 26 being passed in the parliament.
The primary aim of the College is to gain recognition for Family medicine as an academic discipline and during the past four decades it has made tremendous progress in regard to this dream. The educational activities of the College have collectively contributed to better standards in family practice in Sri Lanka. The College publishes its own journal called the Sri Lankan Family Physician and has its own Newsletter and Website.
The main course conducted by the Faculty of Teachers of the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka, is the course of training and subsequent qualifying examination- the MCGP (Member of the College of General Practitioners). MCGP is the only diploma programme recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Council outside the University Diplomas.
